We apply the averaging theory of first order to study the periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems describing an universe filled with a scalar field which possesses three parameters. The main results are the following. First, we provide sufficient conditions on the parameters of these cosmological model, which guarantee that at any positive or negative Hamiltonian level, the Hamiltonian system has periodic orbits, the number of such periodic orbits and their stability change with the values of the parameters. These periodic orbits live in the whole phase space in a continuous family of periodic orbits parameterized by the Hamiltonian level. Second, under convenient assumptions we show the non–integrability of these cosmological systems in the sense of Liouville–Arnol’d, proving that cannot exist any second first integral of class C. It is important to mention that the tools (i.e the averaging theory for studying the existence of periodic orbits and their kind of stability, and the multipliers of these periodic orbits for studying the integrability of the Hamiltonian system) used here for proving our results on the cosmological scalar field, can be applied to Hamiltonian systems with an arbitrary number of degrees of freedom.

Global integrability of cosmological scalar fields

We investigate the Liouvillian integrability of Hamiltonian systems describing a universe filled with a scalar field (possibly complex). The tool used is the differential Galois group approach, as introduced by Morales-Ruiz and Ramis. The main result is that the generic systems with minimal coupling are non-integrable, although there still exist some values of parameters for which integrability...

Generalized Friedmann-robertson-walker Hamiltonian Systems: Periodic Orbits and Non–integrability

The averaging theory of first order is applied to study a generalization of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Hamiltonian systems with three parameters. Two main results are proved. First, we provide sufficient conditions on the three parameters of the generalized system to guarantee the existence of continuous families of periodic orbits parameterized by the energy, and these families are given u...

Bulk viscous string cosmological models in Saez – Ballester theory of gravitation

Spatially homogeneous Bianchi type-II, VIII and IX anisotropic, as well as isotropic cosmological models can be obtained in a scalar tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Saez and Ballester (1986) when the source for energy momentum tensor is a bulk viscous fluid containing one-dimensional cosmic strings. All the models obtained and presented here are expanding, non-rotating and accelerating...

Global dynamics of cosmological scalar fields – Part II

This is the second part of integrability analysis of cosmological models with scalar fields. Here, we study systems with conformal coupling, and show that apart from four cases, where explicit first integrals are known, the generic system is not integrable. We also comment on some chaotic properties of the system, and the issues of integrability restricted to the real domain.
